Scandal Episodes 404 and 214: Compare and Contrast
Don’t push me ‘cause I’m close to the edge…
What sucks about this is people will twist this into Fitz being abusive and totally overlook his personal space being invaded.
I certainly don’t think Fitz is abusive, but it is certainly interesting that he doesn’t like his personal space being invaded, yet he was literally all up in Olivia’s nose just moments ago in the Oval Office.
The gender politics on this show are insane that way aren’t they ? It’s all good if it leads to sexual tension or trysts. A man in Shondaland can be all up on a woman but if she were to do the same then there’s an issue.
Is it even the show at this point or just the way the world is?
I think it’s both, it’s how Shonda sees the world. In all of her shows the women aren’t held accountable for screwing people over and when they are it’s usually via slut shaming or their parents shaming them. The men are always apologetic or used to slut shame the women. It’s in all of her shows.
I don’t see the problem as Fitz’s problem, but more as Olivia’s problem (that Shonda gave her). We know that Fitz doesn’t like his personal space invaded because they have him react negatively to it. We also know that Olivia doesn’t mind having her personal space invaded because she lets everyone invade it, from Fitz to Joke, to Papa Pope, to Huck, to Mellie. Sure, Fitz’s behavior looks bad when taken out of context, but in context it isn’t as bad because either he apologizes (and he’s the only one who does) or Olivia holds him accountable for it, even when it leads to a tryst. Also, I’m sorry, but with an alpha male and an alpha woman who are drawn together like these two are whenever they are in a room together, with the sexual tension always high, and Olivia always on the run, well, men love to chase and Olivia always makes him chase her, and I expect him to chase her, and I am not going to apologize or turn in my well-earned feminist card for finding it sexy. Not only that, but that should be seen in context as well. Without their history he would not behave like that toward her. He didn’t act like that when they first met. He knows that she doesn’t mind him pulling her in. He knows that she responds to him positively when he does it. The problem is not with Fitz. The problem is that either intentionally or unintentionally, Olivia has been made mute in the face of all invasions of her personal space, whether big or small.
I think the above is hugely problematic, because all I’m reading is excuses. Excuses that we would not dream of affording to any other character. Excuses that we would never dream of providing for Jake if he’d done the same thing.
“I don’t see the problem as Fitz’s problem, but more as Olivia’s problem”
This sentence right here, is what we would call victim blaming if Jake had been the one to grab her wrists and make her wince.
It’s like people forgot that Fitz was the one who first invaded Olivia’s space, and she succumbed, but when she told him the truth about Jake, he got angry, and when she went to touch him, he grabbed her wrists in anger, and by the look on Olivia’s face, he was hurting her. But by all means, let’s talk about this being Olivia’s problem, and pretending that it’s ok that Fitz grabbed her because Olivia is the problem.
she actually said “ouch” when he grabbed her…so there is no excuse for that. none.
